How Do Implant-Retained Dentures Work?

Implant-retained denture consultation

Dental implants in Lincoln are small titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone beneath the gums. Over time, an implant fuses with the bone through a natural process called “osseointegration”. Dental implants provide maximum support for an artificial crown, bridge or denture by mimicking the natural tooth root structure.

While dental implants are often used to replace a single missing tooth, the procedure is also an effective way to rebuild smiles that are missing multiple teeth or even an entire row. If you are missing more than one tooth, implant-retained dentures can restore both the form and function of your smile!

Am I a Candidate for Implant-Retained Dentures?

Implant-retained denture

According to the American Dental Association, more than 5 million dental implants are successfully placed each year. While dental implants have an incredibly high success rate of 98%, there are several factors that can influence the treatment outcome. Good candidates for implant-retained dentures should have:

  • Heathy mouth and gums
  • Sufficiently strong and thick jawbone
  • Excellent oral hygiene habits

If you are still unsure if implant-retained dentures are right for you, do not hesitate to call our office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Weber. During an initial consultation, we can thoroughly evaluate your smile and help decide which restorative treatment is best for you!

The Implant-Retained Dentures Procedure

While the dental implant procedure may seem complicated, it is actually quite straightforward. Here is a breakdown of the process:

  • The first step is to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Weber to review your oral and general health.
  • At your next appointment, Dr. Weber will surgically place the dental implant posts in your mouth.
  • After the implant placement surgery, you will be given several weeks or months to allow the implant post to fuse with your jawbone and create a stable foundation for your new artificial teeth.
  • You will then return for a second minor surgery to attach abutments to the implant posts. These abutments will connect your new dentures to the implant posts.
  • Finally, Dr. Weber will attach your custom-designed dentures to the implant abutments. Now you are ready to show off your new smile to the world!

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Combining dentures with dental implants in Lincoln provides clear benefits compared to other teeth replacement options. For instance, traditional dentures are sometimes prone to slipping in your mouth when eating or speaking. However, thanks to the maximum support provided by implant-retained dentures, you can always speak, laugh and eat all your favorite foods worry-free!

Moreover, because implant-retained dentures are secured below the gumline, they appear almost identical to natural teeth. It’s highly likely that your friends, coworkers and even family members will not realize you are wearing artificial teeth. Only you and your dentist in Lincoln will be in on the secret!
