Regular preventative dental care is essential in achieving and maintaining a healthy mouth and body. At our office we recommend that teeth be cleaned professionally twice a year. Teeth cleaning is the removal of dental plaque and tartar to help prevent cavities, gingivitis and gum disease. We recommend routine dental x-rays once per year. This helps us to detect potential problems such as cavities when they are small. With the technology of bonded white fillings (composites) many times we are able keep the filling very small. This helps keep the remaining tooth stronger and greatly increases the longevity of the tooth.
Oral health as it relates to your entire body
Poor oral health is associated with an increase in many different bacteria that cause many things including low grade inflammation. This environment in your mouth has been linked to many serious systemic illnesses, including heart attack, stroke, cancer, memory loss, and increased diabetic complications. If expectant mothers have high levels of periodontal bacteria, studies have shown an increase in preterm labor and lower birth weight babies.
